Do the Unexpected!
When it comes to caring, the expected doesn't always work. In trying to offer care to others, people often use what they've experienced themselves or seen others use. Too often, these attempts fall short of being truly helpful and may be hurtful.
That's why we're starting a Caregivers Group built around 12 Unexpected Ways to Care: Practical Skills for Exceptional Relating by Justin M. Schlueter and Kenneth C. Haugk of Stephen Ministries. This group will expand your caring toolbox with techniques that strengthen existing relationships, help you forge new ones, and bring an unexpected — yet refreshing — change into other people's lives, and into your own.
Who is this group for?
Anyone who wants to better care for and relate to others. Whether you're a new caregiver, a seasoned professional, or simply hoping to improve how you relate in everyday life — caring for a family member, walking with a friend through a hard season, or supporting a neighbor in need — you'll build confidence for caring situations and gain concrete skills you can use to support the people who need it most.
Why "unexpected"?
The skills in this book diverge from conventional wisdom and from common — but mistaken — ideas about caring and relating. Many of the approaches people use regularly, expecting them to work, actually have the opposite effect. These skills were developed through research with over 3,000 people — surveys, interviews, focus groups, classes, and workshops, with another 392 people reading and giving feedback before publication — including caring professionals like therapists, counselors, clergy, first responders, and physicians. They are tested, proven, and practical.
The 12 skills we'll explore:
1. A Profound Question
2. Three Powerful Words
3. The Best (and Worst) Questions to Ask
4. The Rush to Debate
5. The Rush to Comfort
6. The Rush to Instruct
7. If, When, and How to Give Advice
8. Spotlight Shifting
9. A Very Careful Exception
10. One-Upping
11. Care In, Share Out
12. Who Do You Care for First?
